  2. This is the hershey library taken directly from the VOGL distribution (which
  3. in turn came from VOGLE)
  4.  
  5. As this is ripped directly out of part of VOGL, you don't get any of the snazzy 
  6. examples of the Hershey text. If you want these examples then you should get 
  7. the entire VOGL library.

  10. This distribution consists of 3 directories:
  11.  
  12. The src directory which contains:
  13.  
  14.     The source for the "GL look alike" hershey font manipulation library.
  15.  
  16.     The following tools:
  17.         h2v    - a program to create fonts suitable for using with
  18.             VOGLE, or VOGL.
  19.         hdisp    - a VOGL/SGI-GL program which will display a Hershey 
  20.               character set
  21.         fdisp    - a VOGL/SGI-GL program which will display a font
  22.               created by h2v.

  24. The docs directory which contains:

  26.     The manual pages for the hershey library.
  27.  
  28. The data directory which contains:
  29.  
  30.     hersh.oc    - The occidental character set.
  31.     hersh.or    - The oriental character set (Japanese).
  32.     README        - details of the format as done by J. Hurt.

  34. The fonts directory which contains:
  35.  
  36.     A collection of font files which index the Hershey character files
  37.     in the data directory, and a README describing their format, and 
  38.     naming.

  40. The following is an exert from the orignal Usenet distribution. Note: it is
  41. worth noting that the entire character set can be printed using hdisp, with
  42. the appropriate device name. Latest rumours have it that the book refered to
  43. is now only available on microfiche.

  47. This distribution is made possible through the collective encouragement
  48. of the Usenet Font Consortium, a mailing list that sprang to life to get
  49. this accomplished and that will now most likely disappear into the mists
  50. of time... Thanks are especially due to Jim Hurt, who provided the packed
  51. font data for the distribution, along with a lot of other help.

  53. This file describes the Hershey Fonts in general, along with a description of
  54. the other files in this distribution and a simple re-distribution restriction.

  56. USE RESTRICTION:
  57.     This distribution of the Hershey Fonts may be used by anyone for
  58.     any purpose, commercial or otherwise, providing that:
  59.         1. The following acknowledgements must be distributed with
  60.             the font data:
  61.             - The Hershey Fonts were originally created by Dr.
  62.                 A. V. Hershey while working at the U. S.
  63.                 National Bureau of Standards.
  64.             - The format of the Font data in this distribution

  71.         2. The font data in this distribution may be converted into
  72.             any other format *EXCEPT* the format distributed by
  73.             the U.S. NTIS (which organization holds the rights
  74.             to the distribution and use of the font data in that
  75.             particular format). Not that anybody would really
  76.             *want* to use their format... each point is described
  77.             in eight bytes as "xxx yyy:", where xxx and yyy are
  78.             the coordinate values as ASCII numbers.

  80. *PLEASE* be reassured: The legal implications of NTIS' attempt to control
  81. a particular form of the Hershey Fonts *are* troubling. HOWEVER: We have
  82. been endlessly and repeatedly assured by NTIS that they do not care what
  83. we do with our version of the font data, they do not want to know about it,
  84. they understand that we are distributing this information all over the world,
  85. etc etc etc... but because it isn't in their *exact* distribution format, they
  86. just don't care!!! So go ahead and use the data with a clear conscience! (If
  87. you feel bad about it, take a smaller deduction for something on your taxes
  88. next week...)

  90. The Hershey Fonts:
  91.     - are a set of more than 2000 glyph (symbol) descriptions in vector 
  92.         ( <x,y> point-to-point ) format
  93.     - can be grouped as almost 20 'occidental' (english, greek,
  94.         cyrillic) fonts, 3 or more 'oriental' (Kanji, Hiragana,
  95.         and Katakana) fonts, and a few hundred miscellaneous
  96.         symbols (mathematical, musical, cartographic, etc etc)
  97.     - are suitable for typographic quality output on a vector device
  98.         (such as a plotter) when used at an appropriate scale.
  99.     - were digitized by Dr. A. V. Hershey while working for the U.S.
  100.         Government National Bureau of Standards (NBS).
  101.     - are in the public domain, with a few caveats:
  102.         - They are available from NTIS (National Technical Info.
  103.             Service) in a computer-readable from which is *not*
  104.             in the public domain. This format is described in
  105.             a hardcopy publication "Tables of Coordinates for
  106.             Hershey's Repertory of Occidental Type Fonts and
  107.             Graphic Symbols" available from NTIS for less than
  108.             $20 US (phone number +1 703 487 4763).
  109.         - NTIS does not care about and doesn't want to know about
  110.             what happens to Hershey Font data that is not
  111.             distributed in their exact format.
  112.         - This distribution is not in the NTIS format, and thus is
  113.             only subject to the simple restriction described
  114.             at the top of this file.

  116. Hard Copy samples of the Hershey Fonts are best obtained by purchasing the
  117. book described above from NTIS. It contains a sample of all of the Occidental
  118. symbols (but none of the Oriental symbols).
